Playboy Bunny Cara Wakelin and Ray Pasnen entertain at The Swizzle Inn.

For many years in Bermuda the name, Ray Pasnen, and the venue, Swizzle Inn, went hand in hand.  You couldn’t mention one without mentioning the other.  They were some great years.  16 years in total at Swizzle for Mr. Pasnen who not only worked there but also lived upstairs.

He says, “I could never has asked for a more perfect situation.  Lots of great audiences consisting of tourists and locals, great food, great drinks and a short stumble upstairs at the end of the night.  I thank the Correias and all the staff at Swizzle for such a great run!”

Ray returns to Bermuda Bistro at the Beach for June & July (permit pending).
Ray returns to Bermuda Bistro at the Beach for June & July 2016 –  (work permit pending).

But.  The times they are a… changing and last year (2015) saw Ray move to Bermuda Bistro at The Beach for his first season on Front Street.  It must have gone over well because he is coming back.

June and July (2016) will see Ray playing not only at The Beach on Front Street but… the actual beach.   (work permit pending)  Bermuda Bistro has set up a location at Horseshoe Bay Beach called The Rum Bum Beach Bar and rumour has it that Ray will also be playing there.  How nice to hear live music while sipping a cold one at Horseshoe?

Mr. Pasnen was just featured on a prominent European musicians website that promotes great acts to people looking for them.  You can find that site here:  Musiker Finden.

We look forward to the return of one a Bermuda’s most anticipated entertainers.  And, for two, we can’t wait to hear “Rodeo Song” and “Red Solo Cup”!

Cinnamon & honey | Incredible facts

Incredible Health Facts about Honey and Cinnamon:

The Encyclopedia of Healing Foods notes of cinnamon that:

  • Cinnamon has a long history of use in both Eastern and Western cultures as a medicine. Some of its reported uses are in cases of arthritis, asthma, cancer, diarrhea, fever, heart problems, insomnia, menstrual problems, peptic ulcers, psoriasis, and spastic muscles. There are scientific studies to support some of these uses. Some of the confirmed effects of cinnamon are as a sedative for smooth muscle, circulatory stimulant, carminative, digestant, anticonvulsant, diaphoretic, diuretic, antibiotic, and antiulcerative.

  • Cinnamon’s unique healing abilities come from three basic components in the essential oils found in its bark. These oils contain active components called cinnamaldehyde, cinnamyl acetate, and cinnamyl alcohol, plus a wide range of other volatile substances.
  • Cinnamon is often used in multicomponent Chinese herbal formulas, some of which have been studied for clinical effects. For example, cinnamon combined with Chinese thoroughwax (Bupleurum lactiflora) was shown to produce satisfactory results in the treatment of epilepsy. Out of 433 patients treated (most of whom were unresponsive to anticonvulsant drugs), 115 were cured and another 79 improved greatly. Improvements were noted not only by clinical symptoms, but also by improvements in brain wave patterns. Other clinical studies have shown cinnamon-containing formulas to be useful in cases of the common cold, influenza, and frostbite. However, it is not really known to what degree the improvements noted are actually due to the cinnamon versus the other components.

That same work also says of honey:

  • Referred to in ancient Sumerian, Vedic, Egyptian, and biblical writings, honey has been employed since ancient times for both nutrition and healing medicine. For centuries honey has been a multipurpose food, used to give homage to the gods and to help embalm the dead, as well as for medical and cosmetic purposes. Some evidence suggests that despite the risk of bee sting, collection of honey has occurred since 7000 B.C.E., and since at least 700 B.C.E., beekeeping for the production of honey (apiculture) has been used. To the surprise of the Spanish conquistadors, the natives of Central and South America were already keeping bees for the purpose of collecting honey when they arrived. Honey was considered a food of the rich for many years. More recently, honey has decreased in popularity as refined sugar, which is cheaper and sweeter, has replaced the sweet, viscous liquid in common households all over the world.
  • Honey is a source of riboflavin and vitamin B6. It also provides iron and manganese. A 3.5 ounce (100 gram) serving of honey provides 304 calories, mostly as 82.4 grams of carbohydrate, almost all of which is sugar, 0.3 grams of protein, and 0 grams of fat. However, honey is more likely to be consumed by the tablespoon (15 grams), which provides 64 calories, 17.3 grams of carbohydrate, and 0.1 grams of protein.
  • The health benefits of a particular honey depend on its processing as well as the quality of the flowers the bees utilize when collecting the pollen. Raw honey is honey that has not been pasteurized, clarified, or filtered, and this form typically retains more of the healthful phytochemicals lost to the standard processing of honey. Propolis is a product of tree sap mixed with bee secretions that is used by bees to protect against bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Propolis is unfortunately lost in honey processing, thus greatly reducing the level of phytochemicals known to protect against the germs; recent research suggests that these may also prevent certain types of cancer. Also important, healthy organic flowering plants will provide the raw nectar that will confer a higher-quality nutrient profile to the honey produced.
  • Within the propolis are well-researched phytochemicals that have cancer-preventing and antitumor properties. These substances include caffeic acid, methyl caffeate, phenylethyl caffeate, phenylethyl dimethycaffeate. Researchers have discovered that these substances in propolis prevent colon cancer in animals by shutting down the activity of two enzymes, phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipase C and lipoxygenase, that are involved in the production of cancer-causing compounds.

The following sections address the complete health benefits of honey in its raw form and of bee pollen, propolis, and royal jelly:

Antioxidant Effects

  • Honey, particularly darker honey, such as buckwheat honey, is a rich source of phenolic compounds, such as flavonoids, that exert significant antioxidant activity.

Energy-Enhancing Effects

  • Honey is an excellent source of readily available carbohydrate, a chief source of quick energy.

Wound-Healing Properties

  • The wound-healing properties of honey may be its most promising medicinal quality. Honey has been used topically as an antiseptic therapeutic agent for the treatment of ulcers, burns, and wounds for centuries.

Anticancer Benefits

  • Propolis contains well-researched phytochemicals that have numerous cancer-preventing and antitumor properties.
It is found that a mix of honey and cinnamon cures most diseases. Honey is produced in most of the countries of the world. Scientists of today also note honey as very effective medicine for all kinds of diseases. Honey can be used without side effects which is also a plus. Today’s science says that even though honey is sweet, when it is taken in the right dosage as a medicine, it does not harm even diabetic patients.

Tips For Getting A Good Night’s Sleep

Following some of the helpful guidelines below can help you get a better night’s sleep:

Set A Schedule

Go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time every morning. This will help your body get used to a sleeping pattern. “Sleeping in” on the weekends can cause insomnia because it is interrupting the sleep cycle that your body is used to.

Get Some Exercise

Try to get 20 to 30 minutes of exercise no sooner than 6 hours before bedtime- any exercise just before bed may cause you not to sleep that well.

Avoid Caffeine, Nicotine, and Alcohol

Avoid things that contain any caffeine such as coffee, soda pop, teas, and candy. Smokers usually sleep very lightly at night and will wake up at the slightest noise, sometimes not being able to fall back asleep. The same goes for people that drink alcohol just before going to bed.

Do Something Relaxing Before Going To Bed

Doing something that relaxes you before bed is good such as a warm bath, reading a book, or watching your favorite TV show.

Do Not Over Sleep

Be sure to wake up and get out of bed at your normal time frame. Sleeping more hours than you are used to will throw off your sleep cycle and cause sleeping problems. It may cause you to not be tired at night and then go to bed later, thus resulting in sleeping in even later the next morning.

Control Your Room Temperature

Extreme cold or warmth can cause you to sleep poorly. Be sure to maintain a comfortable room temperature that won’t aggravate you during the night. If you have a waterbed be sure to set the water temperature at a comfortable temperature as well.

When It Is Time To See A Doctor about Insomnia?

If your sleeping problem persists for more than one month then it may be time to visit your family doctor. Your doctor will be able to give you advice for your particular needs and can prescribe stronger sleeping aides that are not available over the counter.

Freeze Your Blueberries for more Anthocyanins.

It’s already pretty apparent that organic berries are very good for your overall health. The vitamins and phyto-nutrients that they contain spread a number of benefits throughout the entire body body, but is it possible to make them even more healthy?

The answer to that question is, yes. Yes we can.

Just freeze your blueberries

More and more research is pointing in the direction that freezing fruits can actually make them even healthier. This appears to be the case with organic blueberries, where anthocyanin concentration is actually more potent after a short stay in the freezer. In case you don’t know, anthocyanins contain a number of anti-inflammatory qualities, and are known to benefit your overall brain health.

Some research even suggests that anthocyanin may possess anti-carcinogenic properties that could completely revolutionize the medical industry.

Freeze your blueberries for a healthier bite.
Make blueberries healthier. Freeze them first!

What does freezing your blueberries do?

When you freeze your blueberries (for short OR long periods of time), the low temperatures penetrate deep within the fruit and disrupt the tissue structure – this makes the anthocyanins more available and absorbable.

The berries actually have their sharp, blue color because of the anthocyanin in the tissue. Organic berries already have higher nutritional content than alternatives, but freezing them can actually improve on these 5 benefits:

1. Improving Heart Health

Eating frozen blueberries can significantly lower your risk of heart disease. This is because the nutrients regulate and relax the elasticity of your arteries in the vascular wall, keeping them from getting damaged. Consequently, this also improves your blood flow, giving you a healthy blood pressure in the process.

2. Reduced Risk of Alzheimer’s Disease & Other Forms of Dementia

The anthocyanin in the berries can actually improve your memory functions, and protect your brain against cell damage and loss. The protection makes your encoding and retrieval processes more fluid, making it easier to recall information. The berries can also improve your nerve cell growth, and make communication easier between nerve cell processes. This actually slows down the rate that they age, and ultimately, die.

3. Improved Nervous System Health

The antioxidants in blueberries provide your nerve cells with protection, as mentioned previously. They also keep your brain healthy from various forms of toxin pollution that it is exposed to every day. They effectively create a safeguard around your nervous system to keep it healthy and strong for a longer period of time.

4. Improved Motor Function

Older adults, who suffer from impaired movements above the age of 70+ years, generally perform and behave more functionally after consuming frozen blueberries. They have heightened cognitive ability, which shows improved motor ability in comparison to other men and women in the same age group.

5. Improved Digestion

Freeze your blueberries for a healthier meal.
Get more Anthocyanin bio-availability and absorption.

The antioxidants in blueberries protect your digestive tract from any damage from outside sources. The scary thing is, many of the people who lack antioxidants in their diets consequently develop cancer as a result of poor gastrointestinal health. People at risk of developing colon cancer should definitely bring more frozen blueberries into their diets.

Blueberries are already so healthy, but freezing them allows for you to get the benefits in such a higher concentration than refrigerated ones. They will taste just as good, but will be so much healthier without even showing it.

Try them out next time you pick up a batch. Grab a few extra ones to pack into the freezer for a few weeks, and make them a regular start to your mornings.  Next time, freeze your blueberries before you eat them!

Liver antioxidants: get most important naturally

Glutathione is an important antioxidant in plants, animals, fungi, and some bacteria and archaea, preventing damage to important cellular components caused by reactive oxygen species such as free radicals and peroxides.

Most important Liver Antioxidants

Glutathione Booster
The variety of nutrients within Glutathione Booster encourages healthy cellular metabolism, helps maintain optimal health, and can reward us with peak performance.

Glutathione (or GSH) is the body’s own master antioxidant discovered way back in 1889. However, it was only about 30 years ago that the scientists began to understand its functions and discovered how to raise its levels.

Glutathione – GSH – is one of the major antioxidants produced by our cells. It is known as the “master antioxidant” and is among the most powerful endogenous antioxidants produced in the human body. Among its many roles, it’s responsible for maintaining the levels of dietary antioxidants like Vitamin C and E. It is also required for the proper functioning of the many detoxification processes performed by our liver. Glutathione is synthesized from the amino acids cysteine, glutamic acid and glycine. This is one of the main reasons why moderate amounts of bio-available protein are required for proper cellular detoxification.

Get the stress out of your life.
Cut out the stress. We need to de-stress. Take a 10 minute walk, call a friend or even just a few conscientious deep breaths can help alleviate stress.

There are several reliable ways to try to increase low glutathione levels. Taking precursors such as N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) can help to boost the natural production of this antioxidant. Some holistic healthcare practitioners also offer more complicated procedures for trying to get the reduced form of glutathione directly into the body. These include inhalation and intravenous treatment.

Oral supplementation with glutathione is also an option but the problem is that this antioxidant is not effectively absorbed when taken directly because it gets broken down by the digestive system. The Bulletproof Executive distributes a sub-lingual glutathione that is meant to be more absorbable than competing products, and may prove to be a cost-effective solution to inhaled or IV glutathione treatment.

3 Ways to Boost Glutathione Naturally

Liver Antioxidants - treat your liver well.
Cruciferous vegetable are a great source of glutathione. Eat some veggies for your livers health!

1. Eat more cruciferous vegetables: A few ways to boost glutathione naturally at home is by increasing your consumption of sulfur-rich cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli and brussel sprouts which have been documented to up-regulate this important antioxidant (1). The compound curcumin found in turmeric has also been shown to increase levels of glutathione (2). Another factor to keep in mind is that regular exercise can help with the production of glutathione however excess exercise can actually deplete it. Make sure that you exercise to your personal limit and not over it.

2. De-stress: Another issue to keep in mind is stress, which has been shown to deplete glutathione in humans (3). It’s also known to up-regulate inflammation in the body and deplete us in many ways. It cannot be repeated enough that managing stress levels should be one of our top priorities when it comes to our health.

3. Include more plant protein: Eating healthy sources of protein containing foods can help with the production of glutathione, and this is especially important when our bodies are undergoing any kind of detox. Superfood powders like Chlorella and Spirulina that contain the amino acids cysteine, glutamic acid and glycine make a great addition to any juice or water fast and help to retain muscle mass during times of limited calorie consumption.

Nuts and seeds are a staple in most vegetarian and vegan diets.
Click here to find the best sources of protein in plants. They are full of liver antioxidants.

The immune system and detoxification system cannot function without GSH. In his book “Glutathione. Your body’s most powerful protector” Dr. Jimmy Gutman says “Glutathione modulation is an essential part of staying young, active and healthy.” He also states – “By keeping our intracellular GSH levels up we also keep our immune system on the ball and fully armed”.

In the immune system the protective activity of GSH is two-fold – it enhances the activity of immune cells and also functions as an antioxidant within them.  This make it one of the most important “liver antioxidants”.

GSH has been clinically researched and proven to optimize your immune system, maximize the function of antioxidants, support your detoxification process at the cellular level, increase your energy levels and increase your strength and endurance.  Make sure your getting enough glutathione.  Your liver needs it!

Glutathione Booster
The variety of nutrients within Glutathione Booster encourages healthy cellular metabolism, helps maintain optimal health, and can reward us with peak performance.

Glutathione is important for the body’s cellular defense. It is the primary constituent in the production of the powerful liver antioxidants glutathione peroxidase.

Our Glutathione Booster includes a blend of nutrients that have been blended to enhance absorption and promote levels of glutathione in your body.  This blend of ingredients includes:   Vitamin C (As Ascorbic Acid), Vitamin E (As D-Alpha Tocopheryl Succinate), Riboflavin (Vitamin B-2), Selenium (As Selenomethionine), N-Acetyl Cysteine, MILK THISTLE EXTRACT (SILYBUM MARIANUM) (SEEDS), GARLIC (ODORLESS) (ALLIUM SATIVUM) (BULB), ALPHA LIPOIC, L-Glutamine, L-Glycine, ASPARAGUS CONC. (ASPARAGUS OFFICINALIS) (SHOOT) and Glutathione.

Beta Carotene

Beta Carotene Best Food Sources:  Dark Green vegetables, carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkins and tomatoes. Note: Beta Carotene natural form is comprised of two molecules. The synthetic form of Beta Carotene only has one molecule. Therefore, natural food sources are best.

Beta Carotene

Beta Carotene is a strongly colored red-orange pigment abundant in plants and fruits.
One of the best sources of beta carotene is carrots. Have a couple fresh carrots every day! β-Carotene

The term carotene is used for several related substances having the formula C40H56. Carotene is an orange photosynthetic pigment important for photosynthesis. It is responsible for the orange colour of the carrot and many other fruits and vegetables. It contributes to photosynthesis by transmitting the light energy it absorbs to chlorophyll.

Beta Carotene
A powerful antioxidant, beta carotene has been found to help protect against cancer and aging. Beta-carotene is a fat soluble vitamin.

Chemically, carotene is a terpene, synthesized biochemically from eight isoprene units. It comes in two primary forms designated by characters from the Greek alphabet: alpha-carotene (α-carotene) and beta-carotene (β-carotene). Gamma, delta and epsilon (γ, δ and ε-carotene) also exist. Beta-carotene is composed of two retinyl groups, and is broken down in the mucosa of the small intestine by beta-carotene dioxygenase to retinol, a form of vitamin A. Carotene can be stored in the liver and converted to
vitamin A as needed, thus making it a provitamin.

Carotene is the substance in carrots, pumpkins, spinach and sweet potatoes that colors them orange and is the most common form of carotene in plants.  Remember, it is always best to get your Beta Carotene from the plant sources mentioned above!

Garlic has been known for centuries for its healing properties. Why not eat some everyday?

Garlic is composed of nitrogenous substances, sodium, potassium, selenium, calcium, magnesium, silicon, sulfuric, phosphoric acid, vitamin C, D, B, phytosterols, extractives, and essential oils. Additionally, garlic is rich in phytoncides, such as allicin, which is formed by the mechanical destruction of plants, that is – crushing or grinding cloves of garlic. According to some researchers, allicin has a strong bacteriostatic effect which helps cure infections faster. Garlic can also fight fungal infections, which makes garlic a much more valuable medicine than that of many of today’s antibiotics.
